Easy Bill & The Big Beat appear on "Best Underground Band" list

July 20, 2006

Ok, we were tied for 175th place, but hey, at least we made the list. Every year the Denver Post assembles 97 local-music experts to rate a whole slew of local bands. I'm not sure how they judge, what this may mean for a band, or even who 98% of the bands are, but I'm happy to be recognized. Especially since we're one of the only blues bands on the list.

R&B Jukebox dropped from KUVO line-up

January 1, 2005

Well, 2005 is starting off on a sad note. jazz89 KUVO has officially cancelled the R&B Jukebox after 7+ years on the air. The announcement came soon after the fantastic write-up in the Westword, and tonight is the final broadcast.

I have received countless emails from saddened and/or irate listeners, as has the station. Unfortunately the situation is out of my control. I am slated to host some specials here and there, although I am also pursuing the possibility of moving the show to another station.

Thanks to everyone who tuned in to listen to me (almost) every Saturday night for the past 2+ years. It was a great experience, and I won't forget it.

As Alan Freed once said, "This is not good-bye, it's just good night..."

He also has some nice words to say about the band, so pick up an issue and check it out!

Thanks, Marty!

Today the band consists of some of the best players on the scene today, and they play a mixture of blues and rock. Kim Wilson, who fronts the band, is regarded as one of the best bluesmen working today, and has been nominated for multiple Grammys throughout his career.

Easy Bill & The Big Beat to play the 2004 People's Fair

January 13, 2004

If you can remember back to last year's People's Fair, you'll remember that it was supposed to snow during our time slot (even though it was June). However, the day was beautiful, and a good time was had by all! Well, once again Easy Bill & The Big Beat have been invited to play the KEZW Swing Stage (www.KEZW.com), this time with a primo slot! This year we will be taking the stage on Saturday, June 5 from 3-5 pm, right before Lannie Garrett.

Usually reserved for big bands playing traditional "swing," we're honored to be the only bunch of bluesers invited to crank up our amplifiers on this stage that is always one of the most popular attractions at the People's Fair. As always, free swing dance lessons will be taught between acts. Check out www.PeoplesFair.com for details.

CD Release Party Set For December 6th

October 20, 2003

Whew! I've been real, real busy as of late. I am currently working on the artwork for the CD, as well as new promo materials. The recording went extremely well, and was one of the most fun experiences I think I have ever had. All the guys sounded fantastic, and along with Nick Moss' guidence I honestly think that everything not only met my expectations, but far exceed them. The CD is entitled "Midnight Creep" and features 12 songs: 6 songs that I wrote alongside covers of Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Paul Gayten, Ivory Joe Hunter, Jimmy McCracklin and Googie Rene, plus a special bonus track featuring a duo performance between myself and Nick Moss, who made up lyrics on the spot (btw, that spot was at 4:15AM after recording all day). It all sounds great, and I can't wait until it is finished so that you can listen to it! The official release date will be Tuesday, December 9, and a special CD Release Party has been planned for Saturday, December 6, so mark your calendar! It will take place at the ** NEW ** Skylark Lounge at 140 S. Broadway in Denver. This place is looking great, and I'm looking forward to playing there for the first time. It's HUGE, with pleanty of space to dance, a big bar, and the same friendly staff.

Rehearsals Start Tomorrow!

August 26, 2003

Well kids, you've been asking for over a year, and we're finally going to do it. We start rehearsing tomorrow in preparation for recording our debut CD, and on September 14th and 15th we will be heading into the jazz89 KUVO in-house studio to record "live," just like they used to do back in the day. The recording will feature eight original songs, as well as five choice covers by the likes of Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Ivory Joe Hunter, Paul Gayten and others.

Playing on the CD will be some of the finest musicians in the Denver blues scene, including RD Jones on upright bass, Mark Richardson on piano, Kyle Roberts on drums, Kenny Plum on tenor saxophone, and Gerry Hundt on harmonica. Turning the knobs and making it all happen will be Justin Peacock, engineer for both KUVO's live and in-house performances as well as the world famous KBCO Studio C, and the session is going to be produced by Chicago blues legend Nick Moss. One of the finest young blues musicians around today, for years Nick was a sideman for two of Muddy Waters' longtime musical partners, drummer Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, and later guitarist Jimmy Rogers. He has also released three excellent CD's with his own band, The Flip Tops, one of which earned him a W.C. Handy Award nomination for "Best New Artist Debut" this past year. His most recent CD, "Count Your Blessings," is simply killer, and we are counting our blessings that he will be helping us with our first (but definitely not last) effort. Check out Nick's website at www.NickMoss.com to read all about him, and be sure to put aside the dates that he will be bringing his band to Denver (sometime in October), because his show is one that you don't want to miss!

The CD is set for an early December release, and I will be sure to let you know the details as they unfold. In the meantime keep checking the News page for updates and photos from the session, or sign up on our E-Mail List and we'll keep you in the know.

Thanks to everyone that came out to the first ever Big Beat BIG Holiday Party at Trios Enoteca! Lots of familiar faces (some of which we haven't seen in too long) and many new ones as well, who I hope we'll see again soon. We had a blast, and can't wait 'til the next one! I've posted some of the pictures from that night here, so check 'em out when you get the chance.

Thank you for your support this past year! I really appreciate it, and hope that we can continue to keep you dancing, drinking, and having fun well into 2003 and beyond. There's lots of great stuff in store, so we look forward to seeing you out at a show soon!

Easy Bill selected as new host for the R&B Jukebox
October 10, 2002

Easy Bill has been selected as the new host for the R&B Jukebox, a weekly radio show on Denver's jazz station KUVO, 89.3 FM. For those of you who have never heard the show before, here's a description from KUVO's website:

"The R&B Jukebox plays the music that started a revolution in popular music and the explosion of great musical eras such as jump, blues, rock and roll, doo-wop and soul. This is the music that touched the lives of post-war America in the late 40's, through the wild 50's and into the birth of soul in the 60's. It's infectious, good-time, can't-sit-still, Saturday night music that transcends social, racial, and economic lines."

If you like the music of Easy Bill & The Big Beat, or enjoy my style of DJ'ing at dances, then you're sure to enjoy the R&B Jukebox. Every week there is a new theme, spotlighting artists from the golden age of Rhythm & Blues. The show runs every Saturday night from 7-9pm, with November 2 as my official debut as new host. Until then I will be training with Rolando Garcia, creator and original host of the show, and will be helping out on the air for the rest of the month, so tune in!
